Sumario:Forty-seven cultivars of beans from the Germplasm Bank, UFV, Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were analyzed for their protein and methionine contents. Methionine levels was measured after papain hydrolysis and reaction with nitroprusside. Unspecified components of the beans contributed substantially to the methionine values thus observed. This was realized by ´blank values´composed of all components of the reaction mixture, except papain. The same interference, though in lesser degree, was observed in sorghum and soybean. No interference was stated in casein and corn samples. Corrections were applied to get valiable methionine values.
