description The most important quality factors are identified for each end use given to cassava (human consumption, animal consumption, starch production). Information available on the effects of harvest time, plant age, soil/climatic factors, and abiotic factors (pests and diseases) on cassava quality parameters is reviewed. Future areas of research are also indicated. The importance of quality, not only from the viewpoint of the farmer but also from the viewpoint of the consumer (human or animal), for all cassava products and forms is highlighted. Plant breeders should therefore include quality assessment as a screening parameter; since most of these factors, especially for human consumption, are subjective and difficult to assess and since soil, climatic and biotic factors greatly influence quality, multiple assessments under different regimes are required to assure quality stability. (CIAT) Se identifican los factores de calidad mas importantes para cada uso de la yuca (consumo humano, consumo animal, produccion de almidon). Se resume la informacion existente sobre el efecto que la epoca de cosecha, la edad de la planta y los factores edaphoclimaticos y bioticos (plagas y enfermedades) tienen en cada factor de calidad. Tambien se plantean las areas hacia los cuales deberian enfocarse las investigaciones futuras. Se enfatiza la importancia de la calidad, no solo desde el punto de vista del agricultor sino tambien desde el punto de vista del consumidor (humano o animal), de todos sus productos y formas. Es necesario, por tanto, que el fitomejorador incluya la evaluacion de la calidad como un parametro de seleccion; debido a que muchos de estos factores, especialmente para el consumo humano, son subjetivos y dificiles de evaluar y que las variables edafoclimaticas y bioticas ejercen gran efecto sobre este parametro, es necesario realizar multiples evaluaciones bajo diferentes regimenes para asegurar la estabilidad de la misma.
