| description | Different aspects regarding the terminology used in cassava drying, the process and factors affecting it, and methods (artificial continuous drying, through-circulation batch drying, natural drying on concrete and on trays) are described. The perspectives of increasing the use of cassava roots in animal feeds are good, especially in Latin American countries which import cereal grains to meet the demand of animal feed processing plants. Production associations or cooperatives could be formed; these would be responsible of disseminating the most adequate drying process for animal nutrition. Based on the results obtained on the northern coast of Colombia, demonstrative pilot plants should be set up in order to determine the feasibility of the process and to obtain data on the real working costs. A 500 m2 factory could be used by an association of 20 producers and would process 240 t during the 4 mo. of the dry season. Investment required to install this factory is Col$ 434,900 and possible utility, Col$ 1175/t dry cassava. Figures on the drying processes and cassava chippers are included along with tables on the influence of climaticalconditions on the drying process and the investments required to install a 500 m2 cassava drying factory. (CIAT) Se describen los diferentes aspectos relacionados con la terminologia, el proceso y factores que lo afectan y los metodos de secado de la yuca (secado continuo artificial, secado por tanda en secadores de cama estatica, secado natural sobre pisos y bandejas). Las perspectivas de aumentar el uso de las raices en alimentacion animal son buenas especialmente en los paises de America Latina en los cuales se importan granos de cereales para cubrir la demanda de las plantas procesadoras de alimentos concentrados. Para tal fin, se podrian constituir asociaciones o cooperativas de productores, las cuales se encargarian de difunfir el proceso de secado de la yuca mas apropiado para alimentacion animal. Con base en los resultados obtenidos en la Costa Norte de Colombia, se recomienda el establecimiento de plantas pilotos demostrativas de secado natural para demostrar la factibilidad del proceso y obtener datos sobre los costos reales de funcionamiento. Una planta con 500 m2 de area podria ser utilizada por una asociacion de aprox. 20 agricultores y procesaria 240 t en los 4 meses de epoca seca. La inversion requerida para instalar dicha planta es de Col$ 434,900 y su utilidad probable es de Col$ 1,175/t de yuca seca. Se presentan figuras sobre los procesos de secamiento y sobre maquinas picadoras de la yuca asi como tablas sobre la influencia de las condiciones climaticas en el proceso de secado y las inversiones requeridas para instalar una planta de secado de 500 m2.
