Sumario:Road safety is the result of measures to reduce the risk of accident and injury. (Nationalencyklopedin, 2008). In principle, road safety means to arrive save and sound. Safe traffic in cities is mainly achieved through appropriate speed. In Sweden, more than half of all rides happen with a speed above the legal speed limit (Holmberg, Hydén m.fl, 1996). To reduce speed in order to increase safety requires measures which influence a driver’s motives for his or her choice of speed even if these are not rational (Boverket, 2002). The implementation of satisfying and successful measures is only possible with respect to the needs of the different target groups (Holmberg, Hydén m.fl, 1996). Streetspaces are used by children, older pedestrians, drivers, bikers, busses and many more and therefore have to be adjusted to their requirements. Speed reducing measures can be divided into four groups: vertical, horizontal, optical and regulating (Svenska Kommunförbundet, 2004). Oftentimes, a combination of different measures is necessary to achieve an effective speedcontrol along a street. One single measure is rarely efficient and, in the worst case, can even lead to speed increase (Svenska Kommunförbundet, 2004). A calm traffic climate does not only contribute to a higher safety in our streetspaces but also to an urban development with a human direction combined with design, land utilization etc. to plan an attractive city (Svenska Kommunförbundet, 2004). Good results from speed decreases can also be observed in areas such as environment, the well-being of people and the functioning of the street. If road safety is increased, people’s quality of life improves simultaneously. The streets Kastanjevägen and Köpstadsvägen in Varberg are located in two villa areas. They have many similarities. Both streets are long, wide and their lanes dominate the whole room. The streets are characterized by good trafficability which induces to fast driving. To accomplish a speed limit of 30 km per hour, suggestions of appropriate modifications are being made – narrow, loopy lanes with limited sight to the oncoming traffic. This can be achieved with the help of chokers, traffic islands and heightened medians or enlarged sidewalks. Areas that are used by drivers, bikers and pedestrians together speed humps and other raised intersections are used. A big focus is also put on aesthetic design with the help of vegetation and covering.
