It has been discussed if some breeds are more likely to show aggression and therefore should be banned. On the 1st of January 2008 a new act was enforced by the Swedish government giving the police force greater authority in decisions to apprehend and euthanize dogs if they after an appropriate evaluation of the dog’s temperament think it is necessary. The aim of this report is to map out how an evaluation is done and if there is any room for improvement to be made. The results reveal that dogs of pitbull-and American staffordshiretype are overrepresented. The results also indicates that there is a difference in the judgement of the dog’s behaviour between two police precincts and that some of the words used to describe the dog’s behaviour were evaluative. To improve the quality of the evaluation of dangerous dogs the suggestion was given to standardise the test and the possibility to hand over the assessment to a independent party was considered. |

Aggression är ett normalt beteende hos hund och beteendet har evolutionärt sett alltid varit relevant, även om det i dagens samhälle inte alltid är ett önskvärt beteende, utan är ett av de vanligaste problembeteenden som både förr och idag upplevs av hundägare. Aggression hos hund har på senare tid blivit ett samtalsämne då detta tas upp som en anledning till att vissa raser inte passar som sällskapshundar och därför bör förbjudas. 1 januari 2008 skedde en ändring i lag (2007:1150) om tillsyn över hundar och katter, den nya lagen bidrog till att polismyndigheten nu får större befogenheter i beslut om omhändertagande och avlivning av hundar. Om en hund efter lämplig utredning anses kunna utgöra en fara för människor eller djur, eller om det finns andra särskilda skäl får polismyndigheten besluta om att hunden skall avlivas. Syftet med det här arbetet var att kartlägga hur en utredning av en hund som omhändertagits enligt lag (2007:1150) om tillsyn över hundar och katter går till, samt om det finns utrymme för förbättringar kring detta. Resultaten visar att hundar av pitbull-och amstafftyp var överrepresenterade. Resultaten indikerade också att det finns skillnader i förslag till åtgärd mellan två olika polisdistrikt samt att värderande ord till viss grad används för att beskriva hundens beteende. För att öka utvärderingens kvalitet gavs bland annat förslag om standardisering av polisens utvärdering av aggressiva hundar samt möjligheten att överlämna utvärderingen till en oberoende part.
