Sumario:The county administrative boards will take over the responsibility for the law on supervision of dogs and cats from the police authority from the 1st of June 2018. The purpose of this law is to prevent that dogs and cats cause damage or other inconveniences. However, only one paragraph discusses cats, and therefore this study will focus on dogs. The law on supervision means that if someone fails in the supervision of their dog, the county administrative board can decide on a restriction or disposal of the dog. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the police authority’s previous work related to the law on supervision, focusing on the different causes for decisions and the possible effects that the decisions can have on the welfare of the dogs. The results show that after a report, the most common decision was to send out a letter with information about the law on supervision. The results also show that there was a connection between the owner’s capability of preventing the dog from causing damage or inconvenience again, and the severity of the decision from the police authority. The results also indicate that decisions related to the law of supervision may have negative effects on dog welfare, i.e. when dogs are taken in custody this can result in experiences of stress or fear in the dog.
