För att få en inblick i möjligheterna att odla industriäpplen i Sverige gjordes därför ett studiebesök hos äppelproducenter i England. Intervjuer genomfördes med fem engelska producenter, där fokus låg på odlingssystem och teknik, skördehantering samt ekonomi. För jämförelser intervjuades även två svenska äppelodlare. Den engelska industrifrukten skördas maskinellt från marken med speciellt utvecklade maskiner och odlingen planeras och sköts därefter. Frukten används bara för ciderframställning, eftersom pastörisering inte garanterar att mycotoxiner försvinner. Flaskhalsen i systemet är pressarnas kapacitet i förhållande till äpplenas hållbarhet. Det engelska systemet är både mer arbetseffektivt och ekonomiskt hållbart än de som finns i Sverige idag.
Slutsatsen är att odlare i Sverige bör kunna odla industrifrukt med bra ekonomi om odlingar anläggs och sköts efter det engelska odlingssystemet. Den svenska dryckesindustrin behöver även moderniseras och effektiviseras för att kunna hantera den nya typ av industriäpplen som blir tillgängliga då hållbarheten på dessa är kortare än nuvarande industrifrukt. |

This thesis presents a new type of apple orchard that could be of interest to Swedish growers. Currently the processing industry relies on the availability of second grade hand-picked apples, fruit not suitable for direct consumption, as there are no orchards that produce specifically for the industry. To get an insight into the possibilities of growing industrial apples in Sweden, a field trip was made to England. The interview was conducted with 5 English producers. The questions mainly targeted the 4 areas – growing system and technique, harvest, and economy. For comparison there was also two Swedish producers that participated in the interview. The fruit are harvested by specialised harvest machines directly from the ground in England and the whole orchard is designed for this purpose. Fruit harvested this way is only suitable for cider production because pasteurisation doesn’t ensure that the juice will be free from the harmful pathogen mycotoxin. The bottleneck in production is during the processing where the presses have limited capacity and the ground harvested apples have a shorter shelf life which makes storing them hard. The English production system is over all more efficient when it comes to economy and labour than the current Swedish system is. The conclusion is that growers in Sweden should be able to produce industrial fruit with positive financial results if orchards are established and managed according to the English system.
