Sumario:Pyometra is one of the most common diseases in intact bitches. The disease may be fatal and progression of the disease can be further complicated by peritonitis or systemic effects of infection or inflammation. Early identification of bitches at risk for complications is therefore important. The purpose of this study was to identify prognostic markers for peritonitis, morbidity and mortality in canine pyometra. Another aim was to further describe the presence of common findings in bitches with the disease. History and preoperative clinical and laboratory data were retrospectically investigated in 862 bitches with pyometra, and associations between the variables and peritonitis, prolonged post-operative hospitalization and mortality in surgically treated dogs were analyzed. Variables of possible diagnostic value which have not been described previously were discovered, and several new prognostic markers for peritonitis, prolonged post-operative hospitalization and mortality were identified. In clinical practice the results of this study may facilitate diagnosis and an earlier identification of bitches at risk for complications, which in turn will aid in the optimization of treatments and subsequently improved prognosis.
