The woody ground covers manage to struggle against weeds effectively by competing for nourishment and water, but above all, by the canopy of the ground covers that prevent the weeds from getting enough light. In that way the woody groundcovers can effectively compete with the annual weeds. However, to get rid of the perennial weeds absolutely root free soil is required, since the ground covers do not have the ability to defeat those.
The woody ground covers are very usable as an alternative to grass mostly because they, in opposite to the grass, are low in demand of habitat and maintenance. In the long-term, it saves money in way of less working hours. That is very desirable not in the least in public places where the budget often is tight. To attain their good qualities, the ground covers need conditions to develop those. That is why money and effort should be put into construction and the small amount of needed maintenance- that is profitable in the long-term.
The woody ground covers can improve the biological conditions in the habitat as well to flora as to fauna. First of all the roots loosen the soil and facilitates the infiltration of water and air. Organic materials from the ground covers return to the soil and the canopy creates an even level of moisture in the soil. Further more, they make hiding places for small animals and benefit the microbes. Thanks to this, ground covers help creating more ecologically lasting plantings.
Not at least, the ground covers are used as an esthetic pleasing element. The woody ground covers are many times neutral in appearance, but therefore not dull. Their beauty is often found in beautiful, fresh foliage. During the winter the woody ground covers are characteristic because they do not wither, but keep their volume. A carpet of woody ground cover could be used as a background, to keep the planting together or to make patterns with. Their durability and low requirements make them suitable to grow in an exposed environment such as in a traffic island.
When choosing ground covers every situation must be treated uniquely to make as good result as possible. A broad and updated knowledge of plants is required to make good decisions and lasting, healthy, functional and beautiful plantings to be achieved.
The aim of the thesis is to collect knowledge among professionals and from literature and compile into one document. The expectations are that the thesis will make it easier to those who want to improve their knowledge about woody ground covers. The thesis could contribute to more considered choices of vegetation in the future. |

The thesis could contribute to more considered choices of vegetation in the future. De robusta och tåliga vedartade marktäckarna är växter som används mer och mer, inte minst i offentliga sammanhang. Gruppen inkluderar låga buskar och ris som på ett effektivt sätt bildar låga, sammanhållna grönytor som täcker marken väl. Trots sina många goda egenskaper är kunskapsnivån om dem rätt låg och det finns de som anser att de är något tråkiga. De vedartade marktäckarna konkurrerar med ogräsen på ett effektivt sätt genom att stjäla näring och vatten, men framförallt genom att marktäckarnas bladverk gör att ogräset inte får tillräckligt med ljus. På så sätt kan de vedartade marktäckarna effektivt konkurrera med fröogräsen. För att slippa perenna ogräs krävs däremot att ogräsfri jord används, eftersom marktäckarna inte har förmågan att besegra dessa. Som alternativ till gräs är vedartade marktäckare mycket användbara främst genom att de, till skillnad från gräset, generellt har låga krav på ståndort och skötsel. På sikt sparar det in pengar i form av arbetstimmar, något som är önskvärt inte minst i offentliga anläggningar där budgeten ofta är snäv. För att marktäckarna ska få sina goda egenskaper behöver de få förutsättningar för att utveckla dessa. Därför bör pengar och arbete läggas på anläggning samt den lilla skötsel som faktiskt är nödvändig - det vinner man på i längden! De vedartade marktäckarna förbättrar de biologiska förutsättningarna på växtplatsen både för flora och för fauna. Det handlar om att rötterna luckrar och underlättar infiltration av vatten och luft. Organiska material från marktäckarna återgår till marken och lövtaket hjälper till att skapa en jämn fuktighet i marken. Dessutom fungerar marktäckarna som skydd för mindre djur och gynnar markmikrolivet. Användning av vedartade marktäckarna är ett sätt att bidra till mer ekologiskt hållbara anläggningar. Inte minst används vedartade marktäckare som ett estetiskt tilltalande inslag. De ger många gånger ett neutralt intryck och deras skönhet sitter ofta i ett tilltalande, friskt bladverk. Under vinterhalvåret är vedartade marktäckare karaktäristiska eftersom de inte vissnar ner helt och hållet och därför behåller sin form. En matta av vedartade marktäckare kan användas bl.a. som bakgrund, sammanhållande vegetation eller för att skapa mönster med. Deras anspråkslöshet och tålighet gör att de kan klara att leva i utsatta miljöer, t.ex. i en refug i en vägnära miljö. Vid val av marktäckare måste varje situation behandlas för sig, för att bästa möjliga ska kunna uppnås. Ett brett och aktuellt växtkunnande är nödvändigt för att bra val ska kunna göras och hållbara, friska, funktionella och vackra planteringar ska kunna skapas. Arbetets mål är att sammanställa den kunskap som finns bland yrkesverksamma och i litteratur till ett dokument. Förhoppningen är att arbetet ska underlätta för den som vill bättra på sina kunskaper inom ämnet. Arbetet kan på så sätt bidra till att mer genomtänkta växtval görs i framtiden.
