Tidigare experimentella farmakodynamiska och farmakokinetiska studier av oral cetirizinbehandling till häst har visat att substansen är ett användbart antihistamin till djurslaget på grund av att hästarna lättare tar upp cetirizin än t ex clemastin. Vi har med denna fältstudie utvärderat cetirizins effekt mot sommareksem efter oral behandling. I en dubbelblindstudie deltog 156 hästar från 49 gårdar från olika delar av Sverige. Hästarna matchades i par på de olika gårdarna och vilka av hästarna som fick behandling eller placebo lottades inom matchningsgrupperna. Blodprov och en visuell besiktning utfördes av samma veterinär före behandling och efter tre veckors behandling. Resultaten av de båda besiktningarna fördes in i protokoll. Resultaten baseras på veterinärernas subjektiva bedömning av sommareksemets utbredning och svårighetsgrad före och efter behandling. Resultaten visar att antihistaminet cetirizin inte har önskad effekt mot sommareksem då ingen skillnad kunde påvisas mellan grupperna.
