| description | This final thesis is performed on commission of Torsby forestry administration, Stora Enso Skog. Stora Enso Skog is one of the major forestry companies of Sweden. The main business area is located in and around the region of Bergslagen.
During the last decade the practice of forest management has rapidly changed due to a new forest legislation. The new law has resulted in that the production goal is equal to the environmental goal within forestry. It's also important for the forestry industries to get confidence of the consumers, which has resulted in that Stora Enso Skog is certified by FSC. The demand for increased consideration for the environment means that more wood is left in the forest than before. The internal goal for Stora Enso Skog is to leave 5 percent of the wood volume of the productive forest at final cut operations for consideration for the nature. It has not been clear how much wood volume that's really left in the forest. There has also been suspects that wood is left in the forest for other reasons than of consideration for the nature. The purpose of this study was to classify and quantify non-cut wood volumes and left areas at final cut operations within Torsby forestry region of Stora Enso Skog.
A major part of the survey was carried out as a field inventory of final cut areas within Torsby forestry region, which include three districts. Non cut areas and volumes has been registered within every felling area. The non cut forest was then classified into following categories; consideration for the nature, inaccurate mapping of stands, technical impediment, unnecessary consideration for the nature and other. Non cut areas and volumes was then summarised for each category within each district.
The survey shows a large variation of how large quantities of wood that are left in the forest between the districts. In Torsby district there are much larger volumes left for consideration for the nature than in Ekshärad and Forshaga districts. In the Region as total the category consideration for the nature represents 6 percent of the gross volume, which is about half of the total volume that is left. Compared to Stora Enso Skog´s internal goal of leaving 5 percent of the volume for consideration for the nature, results in that there are left 1 percent more than the goal of 5 percent.
Unnecessary consideration for the nature represents 7.4 percent of the gross volume in Torsby district and in the region as total it represents 3 percent of the gross volume. Inaccurate mapping of stands is a category wich contains thinning stands and will therefor be cut at later occasions. It represents 2 percent of the gross volume in Torsby region.
The reason to that more wood are left within Torsby district might be that the natural conditions varies between the districts. An other reason might be that the personnel responsible for cutting operations are more careful in Torsby district than in Ekshärad and Forshaga districts.
The final conclusion is that there are more wood left in the forest than necessary and therefore cost Stora Enso Skog a lot of money. |

The final conclusion is that there are more wood left in the forest than necessary and therefore cost Stora Enso Skog a lot of money.
