En la década de los años 80, se establecieron 1120 km de cortinas rompevientos al este de la ciudad de León, Nicaragua para controlar la erosión eólica. Se evaluaron las condiciones de las cortinas 20 años después de su establecimiento y cómo los productores las utilizan y manejan. Se muestrearon 100 segmentos de cortinas (de 100 m lineales cada uno) seleccionados al azar de mapas originales de las cortinas. En cada segmento se evaluó: ancho de la cortina, número de filas, densidad de plantas, indicios de incendio, número de troncos muertos, y número y largo de brechas. En los árboles vivos presentes se midió el diámetro del tallo, altura total, altura comercial y número de rebrotes. Para conocer el manejo y uso de las cortinas se entrevistaron 33 productores. El 75 por ciento de las cortinas todavía existe, pero casi todas han sido degradadas por incendios, extracción de leña y madera y la expansión de áreas de cultivo. La densidad actual de plantas en las cortinas es del 17 por ciento de la densidad original y no es suficiente para la protección del viento. Se estimó un volumen maderable de 63373 m3 Scc (sólidos con corteza) en 630.11 km de cortina. Los productores reconocen la importancia de las cortinas, pero no las manejan en forma sostenible. Para rehabilitar estas cortinas, será necesario replantar árboles y mejorar su manejo. In the 1980's, 1120 km of windbreaks were established to the east of the city of Leon, Nicaragua to control aeolian erosion. The state of the windbreaks, 20 years after their establishment, and the use and management of the windbreaks by farmers was evaluated. One hundred windbreak segments (each 100 m long) were chosen randomly from the original maps of the windbreaks. In each segment, a series of variables were evaluated: windbreak width, number of tree rows, plant density, evidence of fires, number of dead tree trunks, and number and length of gaps. In addition, the stem diameters, heights (total and commercial) and number of resprouts of all remaining live trees were measured. In order to characterize the management and use of the windbreaks, 33 farmers were interviewed. Seventy five percent of the windbreaks still exist, but almost all have been degraded by fires, firewood and timber extraction, and the expansion of the cultivated area. The actual plant density within the windbreaks is only 17 percent of the original density and is not sufficient to provide proper protection against the wind. It is estimated that the current timber volume is 63373 m3 Scc (solid including bark) in 630.11 km of windbreaks. The farmers recognize the importance of the windbreaks, but do not manage them sustainably.
