Se evaluó el efecto del bicarbonato de sodio (Na2CO3), extractos acuosos, etanólicos, polvos y aceites esenciales de canela (Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Lauraceae), clavo (Syzygium aromaticum, Myrtaceae), epazote (Teloxys ambrosioides, Chenopodiaceae), orégano (Origanum vulgare, Lamiaceae) y tomillo (Thymus vulgaris, Lamiaceae), solos y combinados entre sí, así como de los aceites esenciales de yerbabuena (Mentha x piperita L., Lamiaceae) y ruda (Ruta chalepensis, Rutaceae) sobre dos patógenos del sorgo: Claviceps africana y Fusarium thapsinum. Esto se hizo tanto sobre su desarrollo micelial in vitro como in vivo, tratando semillas contaminadas con uno u otro hongo. La dosis letal mínima (Dlm) de los extractos acuosos in vitro varió de 1 - 6 por ciento para C. africana con los extractos de clavo, canela, epazote y Na2CO3, mientras que para F. thapsinum únicamente se determinó una Dlm para el clavo al 6 por ciento los otros extractos no retrasaron el crecimiento de las colonias de los hongos o no mostraron ningún efecto sobre éstos. En la evaluación in vivo el Na2CO3, los extractos acuosos, etanólicos y polvos solo tuvieron un efecto fungistático pero después de 2 o 3 días los hongos recuperaron su capacidad de crecimiento. Todos los aceites tuvieron un efecto fungicida, al igual que la combinación de los aceites de canela y clavo a dosis inferiores a su Dlm. Unicamente el aceite de tomillo no afectó la germinación de las semillas ni la altura de las plántulas de sorgo, y el resto de los aceites tuvo efecto fitotóxico. Sorghum seeds treated with natural products for the control of Fusarium thapsinum and Claviceps africana. The effect of sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3), aqueous and ethanol extracts, powders and essential oils of: cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), Mexican tea (Teloxys ambrosioides), oregano (Origanum vulgare) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris), singly and in combination, as well as of the essential oils of yerbabuena (Mentha x piperita L., Lamiaceae) and rue (Route chalepensis, Rutaceae) on two pathogens C. africana and F. thapsinum, of sorghum was evaluated. The effects on mycelial growth were determined in vitro and in vivo on seeds contaminated with one or other of the fungi. The minimum lethal doses (Mld) for the aqueous extracts in vitro ranged from 1 to 6 percent in C. africana with cinnamon, clove, Mexican tea and Na2CO3, whilst for F. thapsinum only clove had a Mld in 6 percent. The other extracts did not delay colony growth of the fungi and showed no effect on them. In in vivo tests, Na2CO3, aqueous and ethanol extracts and powders were found to have a fungistatic effect but after 2 or 3 days the fungi recuperated their capacity for growth. All the essential oils and the combination of clove with cinnamon had a fungicidal effect with doses less than their Mld. Only thyme essential oil did not affect either seed germination or sorghum seedling height.
