description Corn breeders have recently emphasized the importance of the plant ideotype in the efficiency of grain production. A review of recent papers on the subject could be useful in the achievement of advancement in this sense. The basis of this type of improvement are stated as well as the major agronomic characters to be considered. A potential plant ideotype is discussed in order to get higher yields per area under cultivation within a suitable environment. Finally, the criterion of how to measure plant efficiency, the polygenic nature of the efficiency and the possibilities of its genetic improvement, are discussed.
