| description | Technical and administrative aspects of the cassava natural drying project on the Atlantic Coast of Colombia and its process of development are reviewed. The project, now in its 10th yr, has undergone 3 phases: the exptl. phase 1981 (building of natural drying plant, adapting of processing technology, developing of operational scheme); the demostration phase 1982/83 (semicommercial operation of the pilot plant with farmers fully responsible for plant management; and replication phase 1983 onward (establishment of more than 40 drying plants at other sites on the Atlantic Coast). Details are also provided on the small-scale drying technology for chipping and natural drying of roots. Likewise, institutional relationships and interactions within the rural development project are examined. The pilot project brought important benefits to 3 principal groups of people involved: farmers, development agents, and researchers. This project has served as a model for carrying out similar projects in other Latin American countries. Results to date have shown the effectiveness of the pilot project concept to ensure that researchers and development agents responsible for generating and transferring technology will work together with the farmer to generate viable solutions to their problems. (CIAT) Se revisaron aspectos tecnicos y administrativos del proyecto de secamiento natural de la yuca en la Costa Atlantica de Colombia y su proceso de desarrollo. El proyecto, que se encuentra en su decimo ano, ha pasado por 3 fases: la fase exptl. 1981 (construccion de la planta de secamiento natural, adaptacion de la tecnologia de procesamiento, desarrollo de la esquema operacional); la fase demostrativa 1982/83 (operacion semicomercial de la planta piloto con los agricultores plenamente responsables del manejo de la planta); y fase de replica 1983 en adelante (establecimiento de mas de 40 plantas de secado en otras areas de la Costa Atlantica). Tambien se dan detalles de la tecnologia de secado en pequena escala para el trozado y secado natural de las raices. Igualmente, se examinan las relaciones e interacciones institucionales dentro del proyecto de desarrollo rural. El proyecto piloto ha traido importantes beneficios para los 3 principales grupos de personas involucradas: los agricultores, los agentes de desarrollo y los investigadores. El proyecto ha servido como modelo para la ejecucion de proyectos similares en otros paises de America Latina. Los resultados hasta la fecha demuestran la efectividad del concepto del proyecto piloto como un medio para asegurar que los investigadores y los agentes de desarrollo responsables de la generacion y transferencia de tecnologia trabajen junto con el agricultor para generar soluciones viables a sus problemas.
