El género Spodoptera, un grupo de armyworrns, incluyegraves plagas mundiales de maíz (Ortega 1974) y otros cultivos(Lamb 1974). El género fue erigida en 1852 por Guenée (citadoen Luginbill 192 8) y, tras la revisión de Zimmerman(1958), incluye especies que había en el Laphygma género.
