description Abstract The aim of this literature study was to investigate the possibility of using food waste and by-products as protein feed for pigs, and why it is not done to a larger extent today. It is important to find new sustainable feed products that can be fed to farm animals for several reasons, in particular to reduce the environment impact. Since pigs are omnivorous and monogastric, they have the potential of converting food waste and by-products to high quality protein in form of muscle tissue, which in turn can be consumed by humans. Rules and prohibitions against the use of this sort of feed primary depends on former diseases outbreaks, caused by for instance different viruses such as Hepatitis-E virus (HEV). These viruses can be present in some of the by-products and there is a risk that they can be spread to both animals and humans. Many studies have shown that heat treatment of meat products inactivates these viruses, and with the improved knowledge we have today it would probably be possible to feed food waste and by-products to our animals in a safe way.

2016-06-08 First cycle, G2E NonPeerReviewed application/pdf sv https://stud.epsilon.slu.se/9165/1/sundstrom_e_160521.pdf Sundström, Elin, 2016.
