It is possible that changes in the feeding and management of these cows can counteract some of the problems.
In this literature review various issues are raised and discussed such as the cows’ age and anatomy, the calf's sex and weight, feed rations, vitamins and calving assistance. The conclusion showed that over - and undernutrition and lack of vitamin E in SRB and Holstein increase the number of stillbirths and calving difficulty in these breeds. Even early assistance, non-assistance and/or ignorance from animal keepers at calving increased calving difficulties and stillbirths. Correct amounts of feed and vitamin E in pregnant heifers and cows together with well-trained stockmen could reduce stillbirths and calving difficulty in SRB and Holstein. |

Under de senaste tre årtiondena har kalvdödlighet ökat hos Svensk rödbrokig Boskap (SRB) och Svensk Holstein (SH). Detta beror till en stor del av användning av importerad sperma från Holsteintjurar från USA som har genererat större kalvar. Det är möjligt att det går att motverka en del av dessa effekter med förändringar i utfodring och skötsel av dessa mjölkkor. I denna litteraturstudie har olika aspekter tagits upp och diskuterats, så som till exempel kons ålder och anatomi, kalvens kön och vikt samt fodergivor, vitaminer och kalvningshjälp. Slutsatsen var att över- och underutfodring och brist på E-vitamin hos SRB och Holsteinkor ökar antalet dödfödslar och kalvningssvårigheter hos dessa raser. Även för tidig assistans, helt utebliven assistans och/eller okunskap hos djurskötare vid kalvning ökade kalvningssvårigheter och dödfödslar hos korna. Att lägga vikt vid rätt fodermängd, E-vitamin hos dräktiga kvigor och kor tillsammans med välutbildade djurskötare skulle kunna minska antalet dödfödslar och kalvningssvårigheter hos SRB och Holstein.
