Sumario:The purpose of this study was to see if there is any connection between the horse and the rider's physiological exertion level during work and to see if riders can assess the degree of effort in the horse subjectively. The hypothesis was that there is a connection between the rider and the horse’s physiological response to work and that the rider’s experience of its own and the horse’s effort is the same as the physiological effort. Six Icelandic horses and three riders used in a standardized working test at walk, trot and galopp. Plasma lactate and respiratory rate were measured in horses, heart rate were measured in both horse and rider throughout the exercise test. A questionnaire was answered by the riders after each test to measure their subjective assessment of the horses, the parameters impulsion, strength, and quality of gaits were assessed on a 5-point scale. The riders placed on the Borg-scale how stressful they themselves experienced the exercise test. Heart frequencies for horse and rider follow each other well through the session, but their own heart rate is a poor indicator for the riders to assess if the horse made a physiologically exhausting shift. A better indicator turned out to be the assessed quality of galopp.
