Perennials do also give a colour- and senceexperience in a more detailed way than can be achieved with only trees and shrubs. One of the ojects of this essay is to give more examples of motives for using perennials in urban areas.
Having in mind the increasing use of perennials, you can expect a growing need for better understading of how to create successfull perennial plantings. In spite of the increasing interest it is hard to find any written information in this subject. For that reason, the main purpose of this examination paper is to document and illustrate a few examples of how to do, concerning all the aspects from design and construction to organisation and maintenance. The perennial planting is placed in a greater context and is also looked apon from an economic and ecoligic point of view.
The essay is mainly based on perennial planting studies and intervjues whith a number of persons who have a great practical experience in this subject. The intervjues have a lot in common, and they all agree that it takes both will and engagement to accomplish this kind of project. In some particular respects the intervju examples also differ quite much. Therefore this paper indicates that these perennial projects can be approached in many different ways, and caused to that fact an attempt is made to define some of these ways.

Sammanfattning: Perenner i den offentliga miljön har under de senaste årtiondena blivit alltmer populärt. Denna växtgrupp har blivit en mer accepterad byggsten i skapandet av trivsamma offentliga rum, och man har också fått upp ögonen för perennernas funktionella egenskaper. Perenner möjliggör även en färg- och sinnesupplevelse i en helt annan detaljeringsgrad jämfört med planteringar med enbart träd och buskar. Detta arbete syftar delvis till att ge exempel på fler motiv till att använda perenner i de urbana miljöerna. Med den ökande användningen av perenner i åtanke, kan man ana ett växande behov av att också få en bättre förståelse för vad som krävs för att lyckas med en perennplantering. Trots det ökande intresset är det idag svårt att finna skriftlig information i ämnet. Detta examensarbete har därför till syfte att dokumentera och illustrera några exempel på hur man kan gå till väga när det gäller allt från gestaltning och anläggning till organisation och skötsel. Perennplanteringen placeras in i ett större sammanhang där de ekonomiska och ekologiska aspekterna också diskuteras. Arbetet bygger i huvudsak på platsstudier och intervjuer med ett antal personer som har goda praktiska erfarenheter inom området. Exemplen som tas upp har mycket gemensamt, och alla visar på att det krävs mycket vilja och ett stort engagemang för att genomföra större perennprojekt. På några punkter skiljer sig exemplen också en hel del från varandra. Arbetet visar därmed att dessa projekt kan angripas från många olika håll, och med det som bakgrund görs ett försök att definiera några olika förhållningssätt som finns till perennanvändningen i det offentliga rummet.
