The production of beef in Sweden has decreased but the import has increased. The number of dairy cows has decreased while beef-production with suckler-cows has increased in Sweden. If the consumption should become sustainable it must be seen in three dimensions and they are economic, ecological and societal. These dimensions are analyzed in this paper. To get income support for having beef-production with suckler-cows and to pay taxes for being a polluter are included in the economic dimension. Included in the ecological dimension is that the production should have as low impact on the environment as possible. The impact a product has on the environment can be analyzed in a life cycle assessment. In the societal dimension the impact that diets, requested products, population growth and animal ethics have on the consumption is included. The concept of sustainability is hard to define but all three dimensions must be included if the consumption should be sustainable. The consumer should not stop eat beef and dairy products but the products that are consumed in Sweden should be produced in Sweden and the attitude of the consumer must change and the production must be more effective.

Det konsumeras mycket nötkött och mejeriprodukter i Sverige. I samband med produktionen av dessa produkter släpps det ut mycket växthusgaser. Produktionen av nötkött har minskat i Sverige men importen har ökat. Antalet mjölkkor har minskat medan köttproduktion med dikor har ökat i Sverige. För att konsumtionen av animaliska livsmedel ska kunna bli hållbar behöver den ses i dimensionerna ekonomisk, ekologisk och social hållbarhet och dessa dimensioner undersöks i denna uppsats. Bidrag för att ha dikor i köttproduktion och skatt för att släppa ut föroreningar i naturen ingår i den ekonomiska dimensionen. I den ekologiska dimensionen ingår det att produktionen ska ha så liten miljöpåverkan som möjligt. Vad en produkt har för miljöpåverkan kan mätas i en livscykelanalys. I den sociala dimensionen ingår bl.a. påverkan av dieter, eftertraktade produkter, befolkningstillväxt och djuretiska frågor. Hållbarhetsbegreppet är ett svårt begrepp men alla tre dimensioner måste ingå för at det ska kunna bli en hållbar konsumtion. Konsumenterna bör inte sluta äta nötkött och mejeriprodukter helt men de produkter som konsumeras i Sverige bör vara producerade i Sverige och våra konsumtionsbeteenden måste förändras och produktionen effektiviseras.
