description Pet rabbits are increasing in popularity and the owners want the same treatment for them as they would want for a dog or a cat. However, the knowledge among clinical staff about these small animals is not always up to date. The aim of this paper is to highlight the needs of the pet rabbit and how these can be met regarding veterinary nursing. Pet rabbits are different from dogs and cats in several ways and their needs as patients differ as well. Rabbits are herbivorous prey animals. To avoid predators, they are very reluctant to show any sign of weakness for as long as they can. This means that the caretaker has to be aware of very subtle signs to be able to detect illness in an early stage. Veterinary nurses need to know some of the basic physiologic parameters that make rabbits special as a species to be able to provide optimum care. It is of most importance to reduce stress and this should start before the rabbit even arrives at the clinic. Preparations, safe handling techniques and a skilled veterinary nurse are key factors to a calm patient. If the rabbit needs to stay in the clinic for treatment and observation, there are several aspects to consider making the stay as advantageous as possible and promoting a quick recovery. For example; reducing sight, sound and smell impressions from other animals, making sure the rabbit is eating and drinking enough and providing efficient analgesia when needed. The goal is to know the species and always try to optimize the care in the clinic and provide as good veterinary nursing for pet rabbits as for dogs and cats.
