description AIM The aim of this paper was to clarify some of the factors that motivates pet owners to follow advice and instructions from veterinary nurses, so called compliance. METHOD An empirical study with an inductive approach was conducted, and a qualitative content analysis was performed. Content analysis is a scientific method of achieving qualitative results. The analysis is based on interviews with five pet owners, completed in February 2012. The interviews were transcribed and the results are made up of abstracted quotations. RESULTS The result in the study indicate that pet owners are motivated by information, respect, trustworthiness and treatment in meeting. These four factors are based on twelve subcategories. The subcategories are; explaining information, written information and calming information; respect for economy and respect for choice; knowing personnel, confident personnel, competent personnel, rumour and available personnel; treatment in meeting the animals and treatment in meeting the pet owners. CONCLUSIONS It is important for veterinary nurses to be able to meet pet owners in a correct manner to achieve compliance. This paper is a step towards evidence based knowledge of factors that motivates pet owners, and indicate what is essential for veterinary nurses to have in mind in their communication with pet owners.
