Epilepsy describes a neurologically caused condition which involves seizures. Epilepsy can be classified according to different types of causes and the nature of seizures can vary. Medication for epilepsy in dogs is limited in comparison with human medicine.
Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common neurological disease and one of the most common genetic diseases in dogs. Because epilepsy has a higher prevalence in certain breeds, there is reason to suspect that it is a hereditary disease.
The inheritance of idiopathic epilepsy is for most breeds not determined, except for a few variants of the disease. Today, breeders are discouraged from breeding dogs with epilepsy and to act with caution in breeding with dogs that have epilepsy in the family. Advances in genetic research and molecular biology suggest that the genetic background of epilepsy will be determined in the future, possibly allowing for genetic tests to be used in breeding. Because of differences in inheritance between breeds it is likely to be breed-specific genetic tests.
SAMMANFATTNING
Epilepsi beskriver ett neurologisk orsakat tillstånd som involverar krampanfall. Diagnosen epilepsi kan delas in efter olika typer av orsaker och anfallen kan vara av olika karaktär. Medicinering av epilepsi hos hund är jämfört med humansidan begränsad.
Idiopatisk epilepsi är den vanligaste neurologiska sjukdomen och en av de vanligaste genetiska sjukdomarna hos hund. Eftersom epilepsi förekommer i större utsträckning hos vissa raser finns anledning att misstänka att det är en ärftlig sjukdom.
Nedärvningen av idiopatisk epilepsi är hos de flesta raser inte klarlagd med undantag för några få varianter av sjukdomen. I dagsläget avråds det från att använda hundar med epilepsi i avel och agera med försiktighet för hundar som har epilepsi i släkten. Framstegen inom genetisk forskning och molekylärbiologi tyder på att den genetiska bakgrunden kommer att klargöras bättre i framtiden, vilket kan innebära att gentester avseende epilepsi blir tillgängliga för avelsarbetet. Med anledning av skillnaderna i nedärvningen mellan olika raser så kan det komma att bli olika gentester för olika raser. |
