description The purpose of this literature review was from dairy cows’ behaviour and welfare point of view describe how feed bunk and cubicles in a loose house system should be designed. Today dairy cows in Sweden and in the world have high demands because of a high milk production, stress and higher risk of being afflicted with diseases. Through selection in breeding the best quality can be performed, but high demands of the environment for the dairy cow is above all also important for a good welfare and for a good milk production. Feed bunks and cubicles are just some parts to be designed in the best way for a good animal welfare. The access of water and feed and the possibility for movement is some fundamental factors that must be supplied. Many individuals per feeding station give a more aggressive environment where cows in lower ranking are pushed away. Feeding ad. lib. or more frequent feeding counteracts an aggressive behaviour of the animals and meet the daily rhythm and the motivation that cows have for eating. A good design of cubicles is important, not just for the comfort for the cows but also for their health. A soft and clean bedding is what the cows prefer and it also reduces the risk of diseases. The bedding material and the design of the cubicles shall encourage the cows to spend their resting time there. By studying the movement of the cows and evaluating their behaviour can cubicles and feed bunks can be designed in the best way for a good welfare of the cows.
