In the work I will describe Jan Gehl’s theories of urban living spaces. My work will largely be based on his theories, since it is documented that design in urban spaces that are created based on his principles, has resulted in increased city life and activities.
To understand the prerequisite of S:t Eriks’s square and it’s surroundings, I will inventory and analyze the square with appropriate methods for urban environments. Later I will apply Gehl’s theories on the new design proposal. That includes that the design will be based on human proportions and senses, and emanate from the pedestrians and cyclists conditions. The new design will provide entirely new opportunities for recreation in the square. Today’s existing activity is crucial for
the square’s new structure, since it is likely to generate more activity on the square. All the design decisions will be evaluated based on how likely they are to generate new activity, and if they are expected to increase comfort and enjoyment of future users of the square. By creating new urban spaces with help of Gehl’s theories, democracy is promoted. By involving users in the design process, the democratic process can be even more promoted. |

I det här kandidatarbetet presenteras ett gestaltningsförslag för S:t Eriks torg i Uppsala. Torget ligger centralt, i en historisk del av staden och används idag som en parkeringsplats. Målet med gestaltningen är att främja liv och aktivitet hos gående och cyklister. Det innebär att skapa en inbjudande gestaltning som ger anledning för gående och cyklister att stanna upp och vistas på torget. Kandidatarbetet syftar även till att undersöka varför liv och aktivitet är eftersträvansvärt i städer samt studera hur gestaltare kan designa för att generera stadsliv. I arbetet kommer jag att beskriva Jan Gehls teorier om levande stadsrum. Mitt arbete kommer till stor del att utgå ifrån hans teorier, eftersom det finns dokumenterat att gestaltningar utifrån hans principer har resulterat i att stadsliv och aktiviteter har ökat. För att få förståelse för platsens förutsättningar ska jag inventera och analysera torget med metoder som är lämpliga i stadsmiljöer. Jag kommer sedan applicera Gehls teorier på det nya gestaltningsförslaget. Det innebär att utformningen ska utgå ifrån mänskliga proportioner och sinnen, samt utformas på gåendes och cyklisters villkor. Den nya utformningen kommer att ge helt nya förutsättningar för rekreation på torget. Dagens befintliga aktivitet är avgörande för torgets nya struktur, eftersom den sannolikt kan generera mer aktivitet på torget. Alla beslut för utformningen av det nya torget kommer att utvärderas utifrån hur aktivitetsfrämjande de är samt om de förväntas öka komforten och njutningen för framtida brukare på torget. Genom att skapa nya stadsrum enligt Gehls teorier främjas demokrati, och genom att involvera brukare i gestaltningsprocessen, kan den demokratiska processen stärkas ytterligare.
