Despite this, research about outdoor sounds most often focus on the reduction of unwanted sounds – noise – but the absence of noise does not result in a good soundscape. To accomplish this, sounds we appreciate are needed. This paper aims to investigate how landscape architects can contribute to a good soundscape. Through literature studies in acoustics and landscape architecture, it is investigated how solutions involving vegetation can reduce noise and add appreciated sounds in urban environments. The vegetation does not only affect the soundscape, but also adds aesthetic values and possibilities for recreation. For sounds to be appreciated, they need to relate to the location. This means that the concept of the good soundscape may vary within the city. Some are good because they are tranquil, others because they inspire activity. Most people appreciate subtle sounds such as the rush of water and the song of birds. Because of this, the design of a good soundscape often depends on effective noise control. It is determined that landscape architects with the use of vegetation on city roof tops, walls and floors are able to reduce noise levels as well as create attractive soundscapes.

Inom landskapsarkitekturen har det länge fokuserats på visuella uttryck, men även andra sinnen påverkar vår upplevelse av en plats. Ljud kan ge oss mycket information om en miljö och de upplevs då många gånger som positiva. Oftast rör dock forskning om ljud utomhus reducering av oönskade ljud, alltså buller, men frånvaron av buller kan inte räknas som en god ljudmiljö, därtill krävs ljud vi uppskattar. Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka hur landskapsarkitekter kan bidra till att skapa en god ljudmiljö. Genom litteraturstudier inom akustik och landskapsarkitektur undersöks hur lösningar som involverar vegetation kan reducera buller och tillföra önskade ljud i urbana miljöer. Vegetationen påverkar inte bara ljudmiljön utan tillför också estetiska värden och möjligheter till rekreation. För att ljud skall uppskattas måste de relatera till platsen, vilket gör att en god ljudmiljö kan variera inom staden. Vissa är goda för att de är stillsamma, andra för att de uppmuntrar till aktivitet. De flesta människor tilltalas av subtila ljud som porlande vatten och fågelkvitter, varför designande av ljudlandskap ofta är beroende av att man tillämpar bullerreducering. Det fastslås att landskapsarkitekter med hjälp av vegetation på stadens tak, väggar och golv kan både sänka bullernivåerna och skapa attraktiva ljudlandskap.
