| Sumario: | A central aspect in planning for sustainable societies is creating conditions for sustainable
mobility. In today's planning, sustainable mobility is based on people having access to public
transport. However, access can be limited by the fact that individuals do not feel safe when
using public transport. The factors influencing perceived safety in public transport in cities are
relatively well known today, and the effects of not feeling safe in the urban environment has
been proven to influence people's mobility. The aim of this study is to illustrate how safety is
perceived in public transport in rural environments. The study is based on five women’s
experiences of safety in travel with public transport to investigate which factors affect the
perceived safety and how experiences of the physical and social environment can affect
mobility. Interviews and a document study have been used to map out the current planning
regarding safety in public transport. The results indicate that collaboration between actors
responsible for planning is important to make all steps of the journey safe. To achieve this, it
may also be necessary to include innovative solutions in the existing transport system. |
