| Sumario: | Today our cities are planned based on a vision of the sustainable city. In the sustainable
city, distances are short and car journeys are fewer. But how sustainable is the dense
city? The green spaces will be fewer, which affects the ecosystem services that the city
produces, such as biodiversity and infiltration of stormwater. Much of our stormwater
is handled underground today and densification increases the water and the load on
the sewage systems.
I have based on the potential of the site, designed a stormwater pond with focus on
experiences and biological diversity.
The place I have designed is located in Linköping, in the southern entrance area of
Linköpings Trädgårdsförening. Today there are plans to build an underground reservoir for stormwater at the project site, as the water supply system must be expanded in
connection with densification upstream. The idea of an open facility has been rejected,
due to lack of space. My challenge has been to create space for the water!
The work contains a literature study in the subjects stormwater and biodiversity. The
design takes note of the place’s potential and consideration has been given to its context, identity and character. As lack of space has been the biggest challenge I have also
studied the technical requirements a stormwater pond needs to achieve. This is to
understand how much space the pond need.
The work ends with a summary of my approach and a discussion about whether my
design proposal meets the purpose of the project. |
