The purpose of this study is to generate a conceptual understanding of the role of intermediaries in the chain of certification through a case study of Svenskt Sigill. The study makes use of a qualitative research method in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with key actors in the certification process. The interviews are focused on the relation between the actors and their relation to the certification in question.
For this purpose, a combination of literature regarding certification and theories about intermediaries been utilized to assess the different actors’ roles in the process certification for Svenskt Sigill. This has been accomplished by building a "chain of certification" that describes the process of implementing the certifications owned by Svenskt Sigill. Intermediary theory is then applied to the "chain of certification" to determine the capacity of the actors.
The results of the study show that the intermediaries in this case are the auditor and the advisor. The auditor lends its credibility to the producer and their product. This serves to guarantee that the product follows a certain expected quality to the producer’s customer and customer's customers. The role of the advisor has been interpreted in this study as more important than previously assumed. The advice and knowledge this actor contribute to the producer and Svenskt Sigill is considered significant and thus the advisor is hard to part with. |

Med en globaliserad värld där livsmedel färdas över hela jorden ställs höga krav på kvalitet och säkerhet av livsmedel. Ett sätt att uppnå detta på är genom certifiering, vilket innebär att följa en viss standard. Certifiering kommer i ett flertal format och är mest känd som en liten märkning som kan innebära allt från att en lantbrukare i Afrika får bättre betalt till att varan är ekologisk. Bakom alla certifieringar gömmer sig en rad aktörer som alla spelar en aktiv roll för att erhålla certifiering. En av aktörerna är rådgivaren, som sällan belyses inom ämnet certifiering och därför är lite av en outforskad aktör. Syftet med studien är att skapa konceptuell förståelse för mellanhandens roll i certifieringskedjan genom fallstudie på Svenskt Sigill. Studien använder sig av en kvalitativ forskningsmetod där empiriska data har samlats in via semistrukturerade intervjuer med representanter från HIR Skåne, SMAK, Ståstorps Gård och Svenskt Sigill. I samma ordning har de ovannämnda agerat rollen som rådgivare, certifieringsorgan, mottagare och standardägare. Intervjuerna fokuserar på hur varje aktör upplever sin relation till de andra aktörerna och sin relation till certifieringen. För att uppnå detta syfte har författarna har utgått från insamlad empiri samt en kombination av litteratur om certifiering och teori om mellanhänder för att skapa en uppfattning av certifieringsaktörernas roll inom Svenskt Sigill. Detta genom att bygga upp en certifieringskedja vars syfte är att beskriva implementeringsprocessen av certifiering från Svenskt Sigill. Därefter implementerar författarna mellanhandsteori till certifieringskedjan för att knyta an mellanhändernas roll till vissa egenskaper. Resultatet från studien visar att det är certifieringsorganet och rådgivaren som agerar mellanhand i certifieringskedjan som definieras i uppsatsen. Certifieringsorganet agerar som en trovärighetsförsäkring för producenter och producentens produkt till producentens kund och kundens kund. Rådgivarens roll tolkas som viktigare för producenten än tidigare antagits. Råden och kunskapen rådgivaren bidrar med till producenten och standardägaren anses vara signifikant och således är rådgivaren svår att vara utan.
