Sumario:The knowledge about the horse natural needs, such as feeding and resting with support for the head, is necessary for the horse keeper to be able to make the right choices about bedding material when holding horses. However, it was not known how the Swedish horse keeper´s think about their choice of bedding material and if the natural behavior of the horse was an important parameter when choosing. The aim of the study was to find out which bedding material that was most common in different parts of Sweden and to see if the horse keeper chose bedding material according to the horse's natural needs. The research questions were; "What is the most common bedding material among horse keeper´s in Sweden?", "What characteristics do horse keepers prioritize when selecting bedding material?" and "What changes would the horse keeper be able to do to meet the horse's laying needs?" The study was conducted through a survey that contained 19 questions. The survey was intended to horse keepers in Sweden and the questionnaire on internet lasted for 20 days. There were 2287 replies collected. Some of the horse keeper´s used two or more bedding materials. Wood shavings was used by 47%, 39% used wood shaving pellets and 27% used straw. The three most prioritized features in the selection of bedding material were absorbency (21%), easy to clean (20%) and easy to handle (13%). Fifty-nine percent stated that they could consider changing bedding material to satisfy the natural behavior of the horse, 12% responded “no”, and 29% responded “maybe”. The result showed that wood shavings are the most common bedding material in Sweden. However, wood shaving pellets are the most common bedding material for business owners. “Absorbency”, “easy to clean” and “easy to handle” are the three characteristics that horse owners in Sweden prioritize the highest. The majority of horse keeper´s may consider changing bedding material to satisfy the natural behavior of the horse. However, it is still unknown what changes horse owners are willing to do.
