I have in cooperation with Sala municipality suggested guidelines on how to involve the local people in dialogue during place analysis. The target was to involve and enthuse as many people as possible with relatively small resources in time and money. The suggested methodology was tried out in a place analysis of Västerfärnebo, a community with about 3 000 inhabitants of which 500 live in the main village. The dialogue included a pre-meeting with a local association, a public meeting and a full-day Open House where citizens could enjoy an exhibition and discuss with the municipal planners. We also arranged a competition entitled "My Västerfärnebo".
Dialogues with citizens appear more frequently in order to achieve democratic validity. In order to succeed with the dialogue politicians and officials must respect the knowledge of the locals and truly listen to learn. Although citizen participation isn’t statutory in place analysis it is needed to understand the conditions and aim of the analyzed society.

Medborgardialog är fundamentalt i ortsanalys där syftet är att finna ortens, eller bygdens, karaktär och identitet eftersom ingen känner miljöerna bättre än de som lever sitt vardagsliv där. Jag har ihop med planenheten i Sala kommun tagit fram ett förslag till metod för hur de kan arbeta med medborgardialog i kommande ortsanalyser av kommunens mindre tätorter. Det finns många olika metoder som kan användas för dialog, i Sala var utgångspunkten att engagera så många som möjligt med relativt små resurser i tid och pengar. Min metod utprovades i Västerfärnebo, en bygd med ca 3 000 invånare varav 500 bor i tätorten. Dialogprocessen inkluderade ett förmöte med en lokal bygdeförening, ett stormöte och Öppet hus där invånare kunde ta del av en utställning om orten och diskutera med kommunplanerarna. Dessutom arrangerades en tävling där ortsbor skickade in bidrag på temat "Mitt Västerfärnebo". Medborgardialog sker alltmer frekvent, men för att dialogen ska bli givande krävs att politiker och tjänstemän på allvar är beredda att lyssna på invånarna och respektera deras kompetens. Om mötesformer även anpassas till de boende så kan dialogen leda till ett förankrat beslutsunderlag och ge demokratisk legitimitet. Medborgardialog är inget krav i ortsanalys men måste ingå för att verkligen finna ortens förutsättningar och mest önskvärda utveckling.
