description To plan and build a garden in Dubai has other conditions and challenges than what you experience in Sweden. The heat, wind and lack of water makes the need for durable plants, a good design and landscaping important if you want to have the opportunity to use your garden during most of the year. The soil is poor of nutrients, alkaline and sometimes saline, witch makes supplying the soil with organic material and various fertilizers necessary if you want to be able to plant a bigger range of plant material in your garden. Another important part is to provide your garden with a good irrigation system that should be put into the ground before planting so that the plants are given a more even irrigation. It's relatively green scenery you meet and to me it's in a way surprising since the country with its climate is rather harsh for the purpose of supporting plant life. The city of Dubai that not long ago was a dessert has with a combination of old tradition and influences from many years of immigration got a garden landscape that is a mixture of the classic Arabian garden and the European. Water is still an important element in the region and is therefore built in almost everywhere in different ways. Likewise is the Date palm an often seen part of the landscape witch provides food and shade. The Wood family's house that's built in a community in Dubai called "The Lakes" is a common townhouse built in Arabic stile with clean and simple lines. The golf interest and the wish for a garden were one feels welcome has been the ground thought for the design. The element of water has been brought in to the design and smaller room or delimitations has made the garden to a leafy, green oasis were the family may stay and spend time with each other.

2008-11-10 Other NonPeerReviewed application/pdf sv https://stud.epsilon.slu.se/13017/1/olsson_d_171121.pdf Olsson, Diana, 2008.
