The aim of this study was to compare spruce and beech concerning distribution, cultivation and soil properties. From available data comparisons were made between spruce and beech forests in Sweden. Soil analyses were made on samples from beech forest in southern Sweden, with and without natural regeneration of spruce. In the organic layer, beech forests had significantly higher pH and lower C/N-ratio compared to spruce forests. beech forests with spruce regeneration had significantly lower pH, lower CEC and lower BS in the organic layer than pure beech forests in the same area.

Bok och gran konkurrerar på många håll i södra Sverige om samma mark. Med hög kvävedepositon och en ökad växthuseffekt förändras förutsättningarna för trädslagen. I framtiden kommer kanske de båda trädslagens utbredningsområden ytterligare överlappa varandra med en ökad konkurrens som följd. I detta examensarbete beskrivs de båda trädslagen med avseende på utbredning, ståndortskrav, skötsel och markförhållanden. Markförhållandena i skånska bok- och granskogar studerades liksom markkemiska förhållanden i skånska bokskogar med och utan självföryngring av gran. Äldre bokskogar hade signifikant högre pH och lägre C/N-kvot i markens humuslager än äldre granskogar.
