Description
Summary:The competition on Vatnsyri airport in Reykjavik was held by the city of Reykjavik and announced in 2007. The competition had three phases. My entry for the first phase is the starting point for my thesis in landscape architecture. The proposal is based on a concept with a green structure replacing the existing runways. These "green runways" will tie together the future development of Vatnsmyri with the existing surrounding parts of Reykjavik and connect the different parts within Vatnsmyri. Contrary to the present situation in Reykjavik, cyclists and pedestrians will be prioritized. The structure will also improve the possibilities for the cyclists and the pedestrians to travel across Vatnsmyri. The car-based traffic will be organized with a ring road. The concept can be divided into three types of movement. The ring road is one of these movements, while "the Green Runways"  amount to  the second. The third movement throughout the area is a straight waterway moving from north to south. This line provides the deep structure in the otherwise flat landscape. In addition to the competition proposal, the thesis contains a preliminary part that consists of an introduction with the competition programme and a description of the starting point, a description of the method, analysis and inspirational objects. Finally there is a discussion with reflections on the process leading to the competition entry and the entry in itself.
