This report consists of a literature study and a summary of pathology findings from ratites submitted for necropsy to the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in Uppsala, during 1995 to 2001. The purpose is to give a general introduction to ostrich and ratite breeding and to give an overview of the most common diseases.
The necropsy data from 1995 to 2001, indicate that many of the diseases are management related rather than caused by infectious agents. Due to cold climate ostrich breeders in Sweden need to supply well designed buildings and good care of the animal. This leads to higher costs compared to many other ostrich farming countries. However, the significance of the climate in relation to health and mortality is hard to estimate. Comparisons between necropsy findings from different ostrich farming countries, show that the results are very similar regardless of climate. To draw any further conclusions about the impact of cold climate more research is needed. |

Sedan början av 1990-talet har avel av strutsfåglar (struts, emu och nandu) för framförallt köttproduktion skett i många europeiska länder, inklusive Sverige. Kunskapen om uppfödning och sjukdomar hos strutsfåglar växer snabbt internationellt men är generellt ofta begränsad bland veterinärer. Sedan början av 1990-talet har det utförts mikrobiologisk och patologanatomisk diagnostik av strutsfåglar på SVA. Arbetet består dels av litteraturstudier och dels av sammanställning av uppgifter från journaler från den patologanatomiska diagnostik som genomförts vid Fjäderfäavdelningen, SVA 1995-2001. Syftet är även att ge en allmänorientering om strutsuppfödning, var de svaga punkterna kan ligga i uppfödningen och även ge en inblick om de vanligast förekommande sjukdomarna. Resultaten av sammanställningen av journaluppgifterna 1995-2001 indikerar att många av strutsarnas sjukdomar beror på skötselrelaterade orsaker snarare än infektionssjukdomar. Det talar för att det finns god potential att förbättra uppfödningsresultaten i besättningarna. Vid jämförelser mellan obduktionsmaterial från olika länder är resultaten ganska lika oberoende av klimatfaktorer. Uppfödarna i Sverige och i andra länder med kallt klimat måste kompensera sämre klimatförhållanden genom korrekt utformade byggnader, god skötsel och djuromsorg. Detta leder av naturliga skäl till högre uppfödningskostnader i kallt klimat. Klimatets betydelse för sjuklighet och dödlighet är däremot mycket svår att uppskatta. Det kan inte uteslutas att sjuk- och dödligheten ökar i kallt klimat, men det är idag svårt att dra några säkra slutsatser. För att fastställa klimatets betydelse krävs fördjupade studier.
