Hamrahverfi is more than 20 years old residential area in Reykjavik. I know this area well. I have experienced big changes there from when the playgrounds where new and exciting with lots of children playing there, until now when the playgrounds are worn out and it seems like there are no children playing there any longer.
For many years I have now been wondering about what has happened. Is it because the children are all grown up and no new children have moved into the area? Or is it because the children have lost interest in playing on the playgrounds and have other interesting things to do? Or is the management too poor? Can we make a better plan over the management so that playgrounds follow children's needs over time?
By reading literature, I have reached a basic understanding about children's need to play and about their outdoor environment. I have read old and new articles in newspapers to get an understanding about people's reflections about playgrounds. I have also interviewed people that have something to do with the playgrounds in Hamrahverfi to get their opinion. I went around the playgrounds to observe their level of maintenance and if they are in use.
In Reykjavik there are 116642 inhabitants (December 2007) of whom 1626 live in Hamrahverfi. Hamrahverfi has eight public playgrounds around the neighbourhood. All of the playgrounds seem to be designed for the same age group children around 3 to 8 years old. On the playgrounds many things need to be improved but they also contain opportunities for improvement. It seems that when the playgrounds where designed, the needs of teenagers and children with mobility handicap were forgotten. There are also other places in the neighbourhood that could be in better use. |

There are also other places in the neighbourhood that could be in better use. Det här examensarbetet handlar om lekplatser, deras utformning och förvaltning. I dag pratar vi allt mer om att utomhuslek är viktig för barn, och att utomhus kan barn få röra sig fritt och använda sin fantasi. Trots det stannar barn mycket inomhus framför dator och TV och även om vi pratar mycket om barns utemiljö tycker jag att det inte händer lika mycket. Det verkar som att det finns allt färre barn på lekplatserna och även att lekplatsernas underhåll har blivit sämre. Hamrahverfi är ett över 20 år gammalt bostadsområde i Reykjavik på Island som jag känner väl till och där jag har sett lekplatserna förändras från nya spännade platser där många barn lekte till att bli slitna oanvända platser i området. Jag har sedan många år funderat över vad som håller på att hända. Beror utvecklingen på att barnen blir äldre och inga nya barn flyttar till området? Eller är det så att barnen inte är intresserade av att leka på lekplatserna, för att de har något annat mer intressant att göra? Eller beror det på att underhållet är dåligt? Kan man genom bättre planering och underhåll av lekplatserna göra dem mer anpassade efter barnens behov? Genom att läsa litteratur har jag fått den litterära grunden till barns behov av lek och utomhuslek. Att läsa gamla och nya artiklar och insändare i tidningar har gett mig insyn i människors tankar om lekplatser. Jag har också intervjuat personer som har något att göra med lekplatserna i Hamrahverfi och få deras syn på dem, samt studerat hur lekplatsernas underhåll och användning verkar vara genom observationer. I Reykjavik finns det 116 642 (december 2007) invånare varav 1626 bor i Hamrahverfi. Hamrahverfi har åtta almänna lekplatser spridda över området. Lekplatserna verkar alla vara anpassade för samma åldergruppen, barn i åldern 3 - 8 år. På lekplatserna finns mycket som borde förbättras men också goda möjligheter till dessa förbättringar. Det verkar som att man vid lekplatsernas planering har glömt bort tonåringars och rörelsehindrade barns behov.
