I de fall detta inte är möjligt ligger fokus på att göra livet för den sjuka hästen så symtomfritt som möjligt. Den åldrande hästens näringsbehov tas upp, samt hur detta kan påverkas av olika sjukdomar. Med åldrande hästar menas i detta arbete hästar i åldern 20 år och uppåt.
Summary
Treating older horses for illness and injury becomes more and more common. There is, despite that, not much written about the ageing horse and its needs. And the research that has been made within the area is limited. This work deals with the most important physiological changes that occurs in the ageing horse, how these changes affect the behavior and needs of the horse, and how this in turn affects the care the horse is in need of. Diseases that more often affects older horses than younger are dealt with, and the focus is on preventing them as much as possible. When preventing them isn't an option, focus instead lies on making life for the sick horse as good as possible. This work also deals with nutrition of the ageing horse, and how this can be affected by various diseases. In this work horses of 20 years or older is referred to as ageing. |
