My intention with this thesis is to reflect on what a gender perspective in physical planning means and what kind of consequences and effects it could have on physical planning and outdoor design.
Gender is something that is created, moulded and transformed by social and cultural processes. And it also includes a dimension of power concerning the knowledge of the relationships between women and men where the standard in today's society is still men's interests.
To implement gender in my analysis of the park I have been observing how the park is used and who is using it. I have also been investigating who's needs and wishes that has been provided for in planning and design. My method for investigating and analysing the park and its social dimensions has included investigations of the spot, interviews, and studying of data concerning the users. A big part of the time for this thesis has also been applied to study youth culture in public places and how gender can be implemented in physical planning.
After making my analysis and investigations I have been able to establish that Stapelbäddsparken is dominated by boys and men and that architectural design will not solve this problem alone. It's a interplay between the social dimensions and the physical design of the park.
By doing this thesis I've learned that there are "hidden dimensions of power" in public places. And that it is important to reflect up on who is planning and who is financing our public places in order to be able to discover which norms and values that is being implemented in the physical planning and in the architectural design. |

Genom att göra en studie av Stapelbäddsparken ur ett genusperspektiv har jag velat undersöka den fysiska planeringen och den rumsliga gestaltningen ur ett för mig nytt perspektiv. Min intention har varit att få möjlighet att reflektera över vad ett genusperspektiv i den fysiska planeringen innebär och vad ett sådant perspektiv kan få för gestaltningsmässiga konsekvenser. Jag har utgått ifrån att genus är något som skapas, formas och förändras genom sociala och kulturella processer och att det i genussammanhang finns en maktdimension som knyter an till en kunskap mellan kvinnor och män, detta är en maktrelation där mäns intressen fortfarande utgör normen. För att implementera genusperspektivet i en analys och vidare in i en konceptskiss har jag undersökt vem eller vilka som använder Stapelbäddsparken idag och på vilket sätt parken används. Jag har också undersökt vem eller vilka som har stått för planeringen av parken och vem eller vilkas önskemål som har tillgodosetts. Dessa undersökningar har genomförts genom platsobservationer, intervjuer med nyckelpersoner och inläsning av material angående parkens användare. En stor del av arbetet har också ägnats åt litteraturstudier om ungdomsoffentlighet och genusperspektiv i det offentliga rummet. Genom mina analyser och undersökningar har jag kunnat konstatera att Stapelbäddsparken idag är ett manligt kodat rum med ett asymmetriskt genusförhållande och att enbart fysiska åtgärder inte räcker för att rätta till detta. Detta har inneburit att de sociala dimensionerna i form av de verksamheter som redan finns på platsen har fått ligga till grund för den fysiska gestaltningen. Genom att i den fysiska gestaltningen lyfta fram och utveckla verksamheter som aktivt arbetar för att integrera tjejer i lika hög grad som killar menar jag att det asymmetriska genusförhållandet i Stapelbäddsparken kan rätas ut. Från detta arbete tar jag med mig en kunskap om de ”dolda maktrelationer” som kan gömma sig i den offentliga miljön.
