description This work derives from the question "What is a beautiful road?". The question is being discussed in interviews with two employees at the Swedish National Road Administration and two former members of the "Council of environment and beauty" at the Swedish National Road Administration. The interviews are summarized in my own discussion about the concept of "Beautiful roads". Many of my thoughts on a beautiful road environment can be summarized in the meeting between the road and the landscape. The contact between the road-user and the surrounding landscape is essential and this contact will be further explored. In the theoretical chapter "The road to the landscape" I define the words road and landscape and the contact between them will be explored in two parts. The first one "Comprehension and identity" deals with how the road-users understands the surrounding landscape and how he sees the elements that creates identity and structure in the landscape. The second part deals with "Orientation, variation and rhythm". These words are describing phenomenon along the road, characteristic places, which gives the trip a rhythmic structure and makes it easy to find the right way. In the Design program I deal with the two headings "Comprehension and identity" and "Orientation, variation and rhythm" in a concrete way. The Design program is part of "Projektet Stråkstudier" at the Swedish National Road Administration. The project deals with strategies for seven regionally important roads in Skåne The landscape along the seven regionally important roads is divided into five characters. Distinguishing features in the landscapes are described and each character gets its own recommendations to make the landscape reflected into the road and make the road-user feel the identity of the road surroundings. The five characters are: • Large-scale agricultural landscape with small changes in the topography. • Small-scale agricultural landscape where views are blocked by topography or vegetation. • Mosaic landscape with pine and beech dominated forests. • Mosaic landscape with mixed forests, lakes and streams. • Forest landscape dominated by spruce. Phenomenons along the roads have also been analyzed. Four types have been raised in the analyses: • Visual points and views. • Village entrances • Halting places • Crossroads I have made field studies of monotonous parts of the roads and given advices about how to get roads with a good rhythm. A discussion about problems that can occur in the implementation of the ideas and how to reach the goals concludes the design program.

A discussion about problems that can occur in the implementation of the ideas and how to reach the goals concludes the design program. Landskapet kring de sju regionalt viktiga stråken delas in i fem karaktärer. 2007-09-05 Other NonPeerReviewed application/pdf sv https://stud.epsilon.slu.se/12493/1/abrahamsson_e_171027.pdf Abrahamsson, Elin, 2007.
