description Actinomycosis is a rare, deep-seated infection of the jaw of cattle that include the progressive enlargement of bone structures. It is caused by Actinomyces bovis, a gram-positive rod found as a normal commensal of the alimentary canal in otherwise healthy animals. This paper shortly describes Actinomyces bovis and its ability to cause "lumpy jaw" or actinomycosis in cattle. It will describe its pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and some clinical presentations. The incidence of symptomatic actinomycosis infection is quite low in Sweden today. The lack of a successful treatment in Sweden for this disease cause pain for the animal and an economical loss for the farmer. This paper also describes actinobacillosis, a deep seated infection in soft tissue, often in the oral cavity and its adjacent muscles and lymph nodes but also found in other soft tissue such as the skin. The diseases are caused by Actinobacillus lignieresii, a gram-negative rod found as a normal commensal in pharynx in many animals, and clearing its part as causing "wooden tongue", actinobacillosis in cattle. Some information is given about actinobacillosis, its pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, some clinical presentations and some information about the incidence in Sweden as actinobacillosis is more frequent and easy to treat in an early state.

2007-06-01 Other NonPeerReviewed application/pdf sv https://stud.epsilon.slu.se/12462/1/andersson_e_171027.pdf Andersson, Ewa, 2007.
