In the analysis part of the thesis, the genius loci or the spirit of place is put forward as means of reaching a solution. By looking at the actual place and its history one can find ideas for a new form. The old, existing structures, for example the buildings and the railway tracks, can be reused and filled with new content. Another reason for preserving the structures is that the need of the railway companies may change again and the buildings and tracks can be useful in their original purpose.
To illustrate the discussion, I have made two proposals on how to improve the railway station in Gagnef, a small community in Dalarna. One of the proposals is historical and inspired by the 1930s and 1940s, a period of greatness for gardening at the Swedish railway stations. The second proposal is inspired by the contemporary large scale redevelopments of former industrial sites in Germany and New York.
Finally, I want to say that it is important that the place is not reduced to a museum, which might happen if your only intention is preservation. One must instead let it evolve into a being of its own and let it be part of its surroundings. |

Den här uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka hur man kan ta hand om mindre järnvägsstationer som befinner sig i ett nedgånget och slitet skick. Många stationshus på små hållplatser runt om i landet har inte längre väntsalar avsedda för resenärerna vilka istället hänvisas till perrongen. Detta fenomen lämnar ofta byggnader och stora ytor med oklar funktion och jag vill med det här examensarbetet visa på alternativa möjligheter och användningssätt. Det första kapitlet berör bland annat järnvägens ekologi, kulturhistoria och sociala funktion men det finns även ett avsnitt med exempel på genomförda eller pågående projekt på äldre industri- och järnvägsområden. Det är viktigt att ta tillvara platsens själ och att tydliggöra de historiska kopplingarna som eventuellt finns kvar i miljön. Dessa spår kan inspirera vid en omgestaltning men det är viktigt att de inte tar över och styr hela processen. Platsens sammanhang och totalitet bör vara närvarande i gestaltningsprocessen så att stationsmiljön inte blir rörig och obegriplig. Äldre strukturer, till exempel spår, kan sparas eftersom de eventuellt kan bli användbara igen. Stationen i mindre orter kan även få en viktig social betydelse som mötesplats om man låter andra funktioner, exempelvis kafé, etableras. För att illustera mitt resonemang har jag gjort två alternativa omgestaltningar för hur Gagnefs stationsområde skulle kunna utvecklas. Med stöd i det kulturhistoriska resonemanget har jag skapat ett nostalgiskt- historiskt förslag med rötter i 30-och 40-talens stationsparksgestaltning. Det andra förslaget med ett mer modernt utseende anknyter till exempelstudiens storslagna projekt där man lyft fram den vilda naturen och de äldre industristrukturerna. Slutligen vill jag säga att det historiska och det moderna inte nödvändigtvis står i motsättning till varandra. Det finns en liknande passion för det moderna idag som det fanns under den epok då järnvägen byggdes. En plats är i ständig förändring och ingen plats mår bra av att stagnera i sin utveckling och därmed isoleras från sitt sammanhang med den övriga staden, regionen och landskapet.
