There should for example be room for both wild games of running and moving around where many children can participate, and calm corners to withdraw to for rest or quiet play.
A good playground should surprise, challenge and encourage children to discover their surroundings. One way to achive this is to use plants and materials from nature, whose
irregular forms and structures can become interesting elements to explore. Vegetation
also gives sence-experiences of various kinds, materials like twigs and leafs to play with
and a place to play house.
I advocate the use of prefabricated playground equipment since they are fun, safe and gives the impression that the area is intended for play. However, it is important that the equipment is selected and placed with care. It should also be combined with more unique features, such as nature areas, shrubbery, sculptures or interesting altitude
to give the playground it's own unique identity.
A very important ascpect of playground design is accessibility. Disabled children, like all children, have the need and the right to play outdoors. Accessiblie playgrounds make it possible to get a natural contact with peers and to develop one's social skills. Finding activities and equipment that can be mastered is important for the childs developement and builds self-esteem. An accessible environment is also a prerequisite
for disabled parents to be able to visit the playground.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to build playgrounds where all visitors can participate in every activity. The important thing is not that all playground equipment is accessible, but that all children are given the right to choose between several different activities.
My report ends with a design proposal for a renewal of the playground in the municipal park in Hedemora, that adds plants and natural materials to existing playground equipment in order to form a more creative environment for children to play in. My ambition has been to make the area accessible to as many people as possible. |

För att en utemiljö ska fungera optimalt för lek krävs att den är flexibel, det vill säga innehåller platser och element som ger utrymme för fantasi och egna tolkningar, samt att barn i någon mån själva kan påverka och förändra omgivningen. Det är också viktigt med variation, både i bemärkelsen att platsen har en unik karaktär som skiljer den från andra platser, och att den möjliggör många olika lekar och aktiviteter. Det bör till exempel finnas utrymme och inspiration till både vilda rörelselekar där många barn kan delta, och lugna vrår där enskilda barn eller mindre grupper kan dra sig tillbaka för stillsam lek och vila. En bra lekplats överraskar, utmanar och lockar barn att upptäcka sin omgivning. Ett sätt att planera för detta är att använda växter och natur material, vars oregel bundna former och strukturer kan bli intressanta element att utforska. Vegetation ger dessutom sinnes upplevelser av olika slag, löst material att plocka med och plats för kojbyggen och rollekar. I min text förespråkar jag användandet av prefabricerade lekredskap eftersom de både är roliga, säkra och tydligt visar att platsen är just en lekplats. Det är dock viktigt att redskapen väljs och placeras med omsorg och eftertanke. De bör också kombineras med mer unika inslag, till exempel sparad naturmark, leksnår, skulpturer eller intressanta höjdskillnader för att verkligen komma till sin rätt och ge lekplatsen en unik identitet. En mycket viktig aspekt i lekplatsplanering är tillgänglighet. Funktionshindrade barn har precic som alla andra barn behov av, och rätt att få leka ute. Tillgängliga lekplatser gör det möjligt att få en naturlig kontakt med jämnåriga kamrater och öva upp sociala färdigheter. Att hitta aktiviteter och redskap man behärskar är dessutom viktigt för självkänslan och utvecklingen. En till gänglig utemiljö är också en förutsättning för att funktions hindrade föräldrar ska kunna besöka lekplatsen tillsammans med sina barn. Det är svårt, ofta kanske till och med omöjligt, att bygga lekplatser där alla göra allt. Det viktiga är dock inte att alla lekredskap är tillgänglighets anpassade, utan att man ger alla barn friheten att välja mellan flera olika aktiviteter. Rapporten avslutas med ett gestaltningsförslag till en ombyggnad av lekplatsen i Sveaparken i Hedemora. I mitt förslag kompletterar jag befintliga lekredskap med växt- och naturmaterial för att skapa en mer kreativ lekmiljö.
