Many of the pollutants can then accumulate in the fat tissues of the body because of their lipophilic character. Brominated flame retardants and perfluorolated compounds are both pollutants of current interest. Both of them are persistent and have negative effects on the environment, animals and human beings. Their concentration in the environment show no sign of decreasing, some compounds are even increasing. One system affected by many environmental pollutants is the immune defence, e.g. thymus atrophy can be developed. The knowledge of the toxic effects on the immune system is however limited for many environmental pollutants. In conclusion, this review shows that soil is the most important pathway of exposure for organic pollutants and that the accumulation of the pollutants mostly occure in the fat tissue. For a more efficient deduction of the effects of organic environmental pollutants on the health and production of farm animals, more knowledge is required regarding the effects on the immune system of environmental pollutants. |

Syftet med denna litteraturgenomgång var att utreda på vilket sätt lantbrukets husdjur exponeras för organiska miljögifter samt hur ackumuleringen av gifterna i kroppens vävnader sedan kan ske. Organiska miljögifter utsläppta av människan kan spridas via luft och regnvatten. Gifterna kan sedan exponeras för lantbrukets husdjur via exempelvis jord som de får i sig vid bete eller vid förtäring av kontaminerade växter. Många av miljögifterna kan sedan ackumuleras i exempelvis kroppens fettvävnad på grund av att de är fettlösliga. Bromerade flamskyddsmedel och perfluorerade kemikalier är exempel på aktuella grupper av miljögifter som inte visar tecken på att minska i användning, en del klasser snarare ökar. Båda dessa grupper av gifter är persistenta i miljön och kan orsaka skador på både djur, människor och natur. Immunförsvaret är ett av de system som kan påverkas negativt av många miljögifters toxiska effekter, bl.a. kan thymusatrofi uppkomma. Kunskapen om de toxiska effekterna på immunsystemet är emellertid bristande för många miljögifter. Slutsatsen som kunde dras i denna litteraturgenomgång var att den största exponeringskällan av organiska miljögifter för lantbruksdjur är genom jord och att gifterna främst ackumuleras i fettvävnad.
