The thesis is divided into three parts; background, inspiration and application.
The background examines four factors which we consider important for the occurrence of inner city baths; water, the history of bathing, inner city recreation and social life in public places. A discussion of the (future) importance of inner city baths and beach like places' is then presented.
The inspirational part is divided into examples of existing places and examples of types of places. The first is used in an attempt to examine the function and importance of inner city baths and beach like places as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with them. The latter contains a presentation of six categories developed by us to facilitate the planning of inner city baths and beach like places. These are further explained with the help of principle sketches.
To make a concrete proposal of the design and placement of an inner city bath and beach like place, we have conducted a case study in Gothenburg as an application. This is mainly based on the obtained knowledge from the background and inspiration. Through inventory and analyses, Ylva Johansson has studied suitable placements of a bath or beach like place in the inner city of Gothenburg. Jenny Thyberger has then compiled a proposal for the design for one of these places.
The goal of this thesis is to convey the potentials of creating inner city baths and beach like places and to offer inspiring examples for the development of these in Swedish cities. Recently we have noticed a rapid development of these kinds of places around the world and we believe they play a vital role in the creation of good outdoor environments in our inner cities. With this thesis, we hope to inspire the planning and realisation of more places in Swedish inner cities focusing on 'blue recreation' and water as a visual and useable element. |

Detta arbete handlar om bad och strandlika platser i innerstäder. Fokus ligger på rekreation samt skapandet och utvecklingen av offentliga, sociala rum i staden med vatten som användbart och visuellt element. Arbetet är indelat i tre huvuddelar; bakgrund, inspiration och tillämpning. I bakgrunden undersöks fyra faktorer som vi anser är viktiga för företeelsen innerstadsbad; vatten, badandets historia, rekreation i innerstad samt socialt liv i offentliga rum. Med hjälp av dessa presenteras en diskussion om innerstadsbadens och de strandlika platsernas (framtida) betydelse. Inspirationsdelen är indelad i platsexempel och typexempel. Platsexemplen används för att försöka utreda hur dessa platser fungerar, deras betydelse för städerna samt de möjligheter och utmaningar som fi nns vid planeringen av dessa platser. I typexempel presenteras sex kategorier som vi tagit fram för att underlätta vid planeringen av bad och strandlika platser i innerstäder. Dessa förklaras ytterligare med hjälp av principskisser. För att konkretisera hur ett bad eller en strandlik plats i innerstad kan formges och var det kan placeras utför vi en tillämpning i form av en fallstudie förlagd till Göteborg. Den utgår främst från de kunskaper vi fått av bakgrundsdelen och inspirationsdelen. Ylva Johansson har genom inventering och analyser studerat lämpliga platser för att placera ett bad eller en strandlik plats i innerstaden medan Jenny Thyberger har utarbetat ett gestaltningsförslag för en av dessa platser. Målet med detta arbete är att visa på potentialerna att skapa bad och strandlika platser i innerstadsmiljö samt att erbjuda inspirerande exempel för svenska städers utveckling av dessa. På senare tid har vi sett en snabb utveckling av liknande platser runt om i världen och vi tror att bad och strandlika platser har en viktig roll att spela i skapandet av goda utemiljöer i våra innerstäder. Vår förhoppning är att vi med detta arbete kan inspirera till planering och realisering av fler platser i svenska innerstäder med ’blå rekreation’ och vatten som användbart element i fokus.
