description This article starts with a review of the literature regarding the normal reproductive physiology of the mare, prolonged luteal phase and medical drugs used within reproduction of the horse, with emphasis on Ovuplant®. The purpose of this article was to measure the progesterone level in blood, of mares implanted with deslorelin acetate (Ovuplant®). The study was performed at the Department of Clinical Sciences, SLU, in Uppsala. There were seven mares included in the study. They were divided into two groups, one experimental group (four mares) and one control group (three mares). Ovuplant® was implanted subcutaneous in the four mares in the experimental group and physiological saline solution was injected in the three mares in the control group. Progesterone level in the blood was thereafter measured three times a week of a period of three months. The result of the study showed that all mares of the control group had high level of progesterone in the blood for 24 (one mare, the luteal phase was interrupted with PGF2α) and at least 45 days (three mares), respectively. The mares in the control group had all normal cycles. The conclusion of the study is that Ovuplant® can cause prolonged luteal phase and could be a future way to treat mares with strong oestrous symptoms.

The conclusion of the study is that Ovuplant® can cause prolonged luteal phase and could be a future way to treat mares with strong oestrous symptoms.
