description Hallstaviks papermill is an industry plant within Holmen Paper. Hallstavik is a mechanical mill and produce newspaper and journal paper. During year 2000, Hallstavik used approximate 1.200 m3f spruce, either as logs or chips from sawmills. Due to that the production is running continuously the mill also needs raw material at the same rate. At some periods the supply of raw material cannot keep up pace. Especially during the summer the cutting and the production at the sawmills decrease. In order to keep the production running at Hallsta during that period, they need to store raw material, mainly logs at the production site. That is costly, both regarding capital binding and quality deterioration, depending on how long time the logs are stored. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the raw material sources of today and to find new sources or ways to provide Hallsta with continuously and fresh wood material throughout the year. To find all the sources of today, data has been collected from Holmen and initiated persons have been interviewed. To find new sources, not already used by Holmen, branch press and literature has been studied and interviews have been made. After that, the different present and possible sources have been put together in order to analyse each source's total cost and possibility to continuously support the mill with raw material. With that information several optimisation calculations has been done to find the most cost effective way to support Hallsta papermill with raw material. The result shows that there are several reliable sources that could supply Hallsta continuously throughout the year with fresh raw material and that without unnecessary storing at the mill. Provided that the quantities can be guaranteed, national chips transported by train are the cheapest single raw material. Irrespectively of which scenarios that are chosen for the optimisation, the result remains the same. The conclusion is that several of the sources used today and the alternative sources must be used continuously to supply Hallsta with and fresh wood material throughout the year without storing large quantities. The supply cost for that exceeds the cost for storage at the mill but on the contrary Hallsta will receive fresh raw material.

The supply cost for that exceeds the cost for storage at the mill but on the contrary Hallsta will receive fresh raw material. SLU/Dept. of Forest Products 2004 L3 swe eng https://stud.epsilon.slu.se/11409/
