The need to create tree cavities comes from the situation where many tree cavity living beetles finds themselves today. When existing trees are to pass out there will be no suitable inheritors yet. The work was initially to focus on cavities created from cut branches. The lack of proper examinations materials forced me to work on naturally dead branches. The field work has consisted of searching for oaktrees with cavities. These have then been examined and if they were suitable, data and samples were collected from them.
The wood covering that results from a branch death has given us the date for the very
start of the tree cavity.
Whether these results apply to tree cavities created from cut branches is uncertain, perhaps the results are more to be regarded as a pointer to which trees/ branches where focus should be put in such a measure. The work shows yet what time perspective which is current when it comes to naturally created tree cavities. |

Med detta arbete har jag valt att undersöka de faktorer vilka är av betydelse då man på konstgjord väg skapar en trädhålighet med mulm i. Arbetets syfte är att ta reda på vilka faktorer som har störst betydelse vid bildande av trädhålighet, och att tillämpa dessa resultat när man på konstgjord väg försöker skapa en trädhålighet. Behovet av att skapa trädhåligheter kommer från den situation många vedlevande skalbaggar befinner sig i. På många lokaler där hålträdslevande skalbaggar förekommer föreligger ett åldersglapp i trädbeståndet. När nuvarande träd går ur tiden kommer ännu inga lämpliga arvtagare med trädhåligheter hunnits skapats. Från början var arbetet tänkt att koncentrera på trädhåligheter vilka härstammade från kapade grenar. Brist på undersökningsmaterial tvingade dock mig att arbeta med naturligt döda grenar. Fältarbetet har bestått utav uppletande av ekträd med håligheter, dessa har sedan inventerats och i de fall de bedömts lämpliga har trädprov och data insamlats från dem. Den övervallningsved som uppkommer vid grendöd har sedan bearbetats för att ge oss ett tidsmått för själva början på trädhåligheten. Huruvida resultaten från dessa är direkt tillämpbara när det gäller att skapa trädhåligheter genom grenkapningar är osäkert, resultaten kanske mer skall ses som en fingervisning på vilka träd/ grenar man bör fokusera vid sådan åtgärd. Arbetet visar dock vilka tidsperspektiv som är gällande då det på naturlig väg skall bildas trädhåligheter.
