The aim of this master thesis was to present an economic analysis of Norway spruce versus
birch. The analysis was based on soil value calculations of different cultivation models and changes in the future. The work was based on both a literature study and measurements in naturally regenerated birch stands. The results from the measurements were used as input data in a yield model in order to predict the growth. The yield prognoses together with the literature study as well as data from the Forest district were used for the economic analysis. One of the conclusions was that birch, although having a bad reputation, showed a better economic result than expected, but with the price level of today, Norway spruce was more profitable. However the rate of interest played a major roll in the choice between spruce and
birch. A low interest rate favoured spruce with a higher initial investment, while birch with a low initial investment was favoured by a high interest rate. Another conclusion was that a small change of the price level would have a big impact on the economic result. |

Med anledning av de senaste stormarna vintern 1999/2000 aktualiserades detta problem på nytt. Många skogsägare fick mycket stora arealer granskog stormfälld. Kan självföryngrad björk vara ett alternativ till gran på dessa utsatta marker? Denna fråga ställdes jag inför när jag diskuterade problemet med Esben Möller-Madsen på Söderåsens Skogsförvaltning. Detta var startpunkten till föreliggande arbete vars syfte var att ge skogsägaren en ekonomisk analys av gran kontra björk i Skåne. Analysen baseras på markvärdeberäkningar av olika skötselprogram och framtidsförändringar för att ge markägaren ett beslutsunderlag. Under arbetet har jag genomfört dels en litteraturstudie, dels mätningar på naturligt föryngrade björkbestånd på Knutstorp Skogs marker. Mätresultaten har använts som indata i en produktionsmodell för att prognostisera tillväxten. Produktionsprognoserna jämte underlag dels från litteraturstudien, dels från faktiska siffror erhållna av förvaltningen har legat till grund för markvärdekalkylerna. En av slutsatserna är att björkens dåliga rykte inte är befogat. Med dagens priser är dock gran ett ur förtätningsperspektiv mer lönsamt trädslag. Valet av kalkylränta spelar en stor roll för valet mellan gran och björk. En låg ränta gynnar gran med hög initial kapitalinsats. Å andra sidan gynnas självföryngrad björk med en låg initial kapitalinsats av en högre räntefot. En annan slutsats är att det behövs endast en liten prisreduktion för att det ska slå hårt på markvärdeberäkningarna.
