A filed study was carried out on 21 subjectively selected stands from the following five districts: Vänersborg, Falköping, Borås, Jönköping and Åseda. As the study is a descriptive study of the soil damages, their character and extension, only stands were tracks were reported were considered. Therefore, the study gives no representative picture of the normal thinning performed by Sydved.
To find out if it was possible to improve the planning procedures interviews were made with one machine operator from each district and district managers
The average age on the stands was 55 years. The most common type of forest was Norway spruce stands Pice Abies. The average siteindex was G29. The most frequent type of ground vegetation was ground whiteout vegetation. The average track size had a depth of 23 cm and a length of 7.1 meters. The results of the inventory shows that only in 3 out of 21 stands more than 40% of the thinning roads were effected by tracks, and that in twelve of the stands less than 20% were effected. The conclusion is therefor that even in the stands that are reported as damaged only parts of the stands are effected.
The results from the interviews shows that the district managers and machine operators agree on what could be done to reduce the number of stands whit tracks. While the machine operators stress the importance of getting the orders in advance, the district managers emphasize the importance of joint ownership, instead of one owner of the forwarder and one owner of the harvester.
Although Sydveds standards on soil damages are high, and sometimes considered as hard to
achieve, they are realistic. Sydved could continue to work with them, but a more accurate way to judge the level of soil damage would be to measure the relative length of the tracks. However, this method is time consuming if it is to be done on every single stand. |

However, this method is time consuming if it is to be done on every single stand. För att garantera ett ur miljösynpunkt väl utfört arbete, tillämpar Sydved miljöledningssystemet ISO 14001. Som en del av ISO 14001 har man satt upp ett antal kvalitetsnormer för avverkningarna. Under 1999 och 2000 var markskadorna överrepresenterade bland skaderapporterna. Det fanns därför ett behov av att kartlägga markskadorna noggrannare, för att bättre kunna förstå var problemet låg, och därigenom kunna undvika skadorna. Studiens genomfördes på 21 subjektivt utvalda objekt på distrikten, Vänersborg, Falköping, Borås, Jönköping och Åseda. Fältdelen av arbetet hade för avsikt att beskriva markskadornas utbredning och karaktär. Därför genomfördes den på objekt som hade en avvikelserapport om spår i bestånd. Studien ger således ingen representativ bild av hur Sydveds gallringar ser ut. För att se vad som kunde göras på planeringssidan för att minska markskadorna genomfördes även intervjuer med distriktschefer och maskinförare. Intervjuerna genomfördes efter inventeringen för att få ett bättre underlag för ett lämpligt intervjuformulär. Relevanta frågor noterades under inventeringen. Intervjuerna gjordes som kvalitativa intervjuer. Totalt intervjuades fem distriktschefer och fem maskinförare. Av de 21 utvalda bestånden var genomsnittsåldern 55 år. Den mest vanliga typen av skog var granbestånd, där medel SI var G29. Den markvegetationstyp som var vanligast förekommande var mark utan fältskikt. Sett till alla skador i alla bestånd var medelmarkskadan 23 cm djup och 7,1 meter lång. Resultatet från inventeringen visar att det är endast tre av objekten där skadorna berör mer än 40% av stickvägarna, och i nio av fallen mer än 20%. Skadorna förekommer således i de flesta fallen endast i delar av bestånden Resultaten av intervjuerna visade att distriktscheferna i alla distrikten var eniga om vad som kan göras för att minska markskador. Även entreprenörerna var eniga. Det skilde sig något mellan entreprenörerna och distriktscheferna. Trots att Sydveds normer vad gäller marskador uppfattas som svåra att leva upp till under de blöta årstiderna, är de realistiska mål som Sydved kan fortsätta att arbeta med. Ett mera rättvist sätt att bedöma om ett bestånd har markskador eller ej är att bedöma den relativa påverkan på objektet.
